Συμβουλές για την Επιτυχία του Παιδιού Σας στο Σχολείο-Ways you can help your child succeed this school year

Are You Addicted to Your Phone ? - Είστε εθισμένοι στο κινητό σας;
1. Πιάνετε τον εαυτό σας να αφιερώνει περισσότερο χρόνο στο κινητό απ’ ό,τι νομίζετε;
2. Πιάνετε συστηματικά τον εαυτό σας να περνά απερίσκεπτα χρόνο κοιτώντας το κινητό;
3. Νιώθετε ότι χάνετε την αίσθηση του χρόνου όταν ασχολείστε με το κινητό;
4. Περνάτε περισσότερο χρόνο επικοινωνώντας με άλλους μέσω κινητού (SMS, tweets, emails κ.λπ.) παρά από κοντά;
5. Αυξάνεται όλο και περισσότερο ο χρόνος που περνάτε χρησιμοποιώντας το κινητό;
6. Έχετε ευχηθεί ποτέ να μπορούσατε να ασχολείστε λιγότερο με το κινητό;
7. Κοιμάστε συστηματικά με το κινητό ανοιχτό κάτω από το μαξιλάρι ή δίπλα σας;
8. Περνάτε μεγάλο μέρος της μέρας και της νύχτας διαβάζοντας και απαντώντας σε SMS, tweets, emails κ.λπ., ακόμη κι αν αυτό σημαίνει ότι διακόπτετε οτιδήποτε άλλο κάνετε;
9. Στέλνετε SMS, emails κ.λπ. όταν οδηγείτε ή κάνετε κάποια άλλη παρόμοια δραστηριότητα που απαιτεί την πλήρη προσοχή και συγκέντρωσή σας;
10. Αισθάνεστε ότι η χρήση του κινητού μειώνει ορισμένες φορές την παραγωγικότητά σας;
11. Διστάζετε να πάτε κάπου χωρίς το κινητό σας ακόμη και για λίγη ώρα;
12. Νιώθετε νευρικότητα ή αμηχανία αν ξεχάσετε το κινητό στο αυτοκίνητο ή στο σπίτι, αν δεν έχετε σήμα ή αν ξαφνικά χαλάσει το κινητό σας;
13. Έχετε το κινητό στο τραπέζι όταν τρώτε;
14. Όταν χτυπά το κινητό σας νιώθετε έντονη επιθυμία να δείτε ποιος είναι;
15. Πιάνετε τον εαυτό σας να τσεκάρει μηχανικά το κινητό πολλές φορές μέσα στη μέρα, ακόμη κι αν ξέρετε κατά βάθος ότι δεν υπάρχει τίποτα καινούριο ή σημαντικό να δείτε;
How to Break Your Phone Habit
Do You Need to Cut Back?
A number of apps can tell you how much time you spend on your phone and how long you’re in each app. Even if you don’t think you’re on your phone too much, seeing the cold, hard numbers may inspire you to put it down.Turn Off Alerts
It’s easier to ignore your phone if it doesn’t buzz every few seconds with a text, email, or social media update. They’ll all be there, no matter how long you wait to you check your phone, and you might feel better and more productive if you let them linger a bit. If you can’t afford to miss some things -- say a message from your spouse or kid -- you can set your phone so only certain texts get through.
Put a Rubber Band on Your Phone
It’s a little reminder to turn off the part of your brain that does things without thinking. If a rubber band is too annoying, try a screensaver that asks “Do you really need to get into your phone?” It might save you that 45 minutes of mindless scrolling through pictures of farmhouses before you remember that you don’t really like farmhouses.
Get an Alarm Clock
When you use your phone’s alarm to wake up in the morning, you’re more likely to get sucked into checking your email, texts, and social media. An alarm clock keeps the phone out of your hands at least a few more minutes. Other ideas include charging it overnight in another room and setting a specific time to look at it in the morning.
Go Cold Turkey
Some experts suggest going without your phone for 3 days. That can help you kick bad phone habits and find new, healthier things to do instead. You can ease your way back into using it -- say, just calls and texts at certain times -- then gradually start to do other things if you decide you want to again.
Tech-Free Time
If you can’t imagine life without your phone for 3 days, set aside certain times that are phone-free in your household. (You may want to include other digital devices, too.) That might be an hour or so each evening before dinner or every Sunday afternoon. Go for a walk, or play cards or a board game -- anything that gives you a chance to talk and engage with one another.
Plan Some Offline Fun
Try something simple like reading a book or going to the park with your dog. No need to post pictures about any of that on social media. Instead, invite some friends to meet you for coffee or a jog and see them in person. Tell them you’re turning your phone off, and they may decide to do the same.
Create Phone-Free Zones
It’s not a great idea to take your phone out in the bathroom. Mainly, for reasons of basic hygiene, but also because it can be good to keep your phone out of certain parts of your life. Those also might include meetings, playtime with your kids, and driving. It’s a healthy way to get used to short amounts of time without it.
‘Do Not Disturb’
Some smartphones have a setting that lets you limit certain parts of your phone during a set time every day. For example, you could stop all calls and alerts between 5 and 9 p.m. and after midnight.
Get Rid of Apps
Those games are designed to keep you coming back for more, but they can’t if they’re not there. You just might be able to get by with phone, text, and email on your phone -- you can check social media when you’re on your computer.
Helpful Tools
Some apps can help limit the time you spend on your phone by locking you out of certain things during set times of day or after you’ve spent a specific amount of time on them. Others offer encouragement or reward you with time after you’ve done things like take 5,000 steps in a day.
Talk the (Right) Talk
You’re more likely to leave your phone in your pocket if you say “I don’t check my phone at dinner” than if you say “I can’t check my phone at dinner.” It might be because “can’t” suggests you’ve been denied something, but scientists don’t know exactly why that one word can make a difference.
Manage Expectations
If you want to spend less time on your phone but are concerned that people will think you’re rude or get upset if you don’t respond quickly, just tell them. Say you’re trying to break the phone habit and it might be a while before you get back to them.
Trade Your Smartphone for a ‘Dumbphone’
If the temptation of a pocket-sized computer is just too much, a cellphone that can only call and text might be a solution. It can’t download apps or access the Internet, but it's much less expensive and might be just the thing that sets you free.SOURCES : WebMD , IATROPEDIA etc

What Parents Need to Know About Sexting (JAMA)
What Parents Need to Know About Sexting
Sexting is defined as the sending or receiving of nude or seminude images or sexually explicit text messages and can happen when one person pressures another to send a nude or seminude photo.
For teenagers, this scenario can happen between people who are dating or those who just started to like each other and one teenager is asked to “prove” they like the other person. Sexting can also happen when one person sends a nude or seminude photo to another without asking for consent first. Sexting can lead to the spread of the photos or messages such that other people see them or distribute them. For teenagers, this can happen if a dating relationship ends; the couple gets in a fight; or a friend borrows the teenager’s phone, sees the photos, and sends them to others.
Thus, it may not be surprising to learn that sexting has many risks. These risks include emotional distress for those who are pressured to send these photos as well as those who receive these photos. Sexting can also cause harm if photos are distributed widely, causing increased distress or embarrassment. Sexting can trigger legal consequences. However, sexting is not rare. Surveys have shown that approximately 12% to 16% of youths aged 10 to 19 years have sent a sexual photo to someone else.
Why do adolescents engage in sexting? Adolescence is a time of life in which teenagers are learning about their own bodies, how to take risks, and about romantic attractions. For some teenagers, engaging in sexting may feel like a way to explore their attraction to someone. It is recommended that rather than having one big talk about sexting, have several small talks over time to check in on your child’s understanding, see if there are questions, and reinforce key messages.

Tips for Talking With Your Child About Sexting
Start the Discussion Early
Start the conversation with your child by asking broad questions such as, “Have you heard of sexting? Tell me what you think it is.” You can then frame your conversation around how much your child does or does not know. Seeing a story in the news, community, or at your child’s school is a good prompt to check in again. Emphasize the consequences of sexting as shown by situations in the news where it has gone badly.
Use Examples Appropriate for Your Child’s Age
For tweens with cell phones, let them know that text messages should never include images of anyone without clothes. For teenagers, be specific about what sexting is and that it can lead to serious consequences. For all ages, remind them that once an image is sent, it is no longer in their control and they cannot get it back. What is online or sent via text can exist forever and be sent to others.
Remind Your Teenager of Their Own Worth
Let your child know that being pressured to send a sext is not okay, nor is it a way to “prove” their love or show attraction. Let your child know you understand it is hard to be pressured or dared to do something but that they have the power to stand up for themselves. Remind your teenager that they are worthy of respect.

10 Tips to Cut Kids’ Screen Time
When you were a kid, did you camp out on the couch with your siblings and fight over what show you’d watch on the family TV? Today, your kids have decidedly fewer limits when it comes to controlling a screen. They can watch many at once, and carry them wherever they go.
As amazing as the technology is, your child can benefit from less time with it. Outside of homework, school-aged kids should spend no more than an hour or two with a screen every day, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics.
“There are a lot of potential harmful effects of screen time on kids, from newborns up to late adolescents and even young adults,” says Craig Anderson, PhD, distinguished professor of psychology at Iowa State University.
When kids watch a lot of fast-paced shows that switch quickly from scene to scene, they may later have trouble when they need to focus in the classroom, Anderson says.
Kids who spend too much time in front of a screen can have other problems, too, like too little sleep or too much weight gain, says David Hill, MD, chairman of the American Academy of Pediatrics Council on Communications and Media.
Plus, he says, kids who watch TV and play video games for hours each day may miss out on face-to-face opportunities to learn, time to play outside, and connections with friends. “Our greatest question should be, 'What is this screen time displacing?'” he says.
How to Make the Cut
With screens everywhere, it may seem even harder to cut down on a child’s time with them. But limits are worth it. Try these tips to pry them off those devices -- at least, for a little while.
1. Don’t give your kids their own tablet or smartphone. “Interact with your children. Do that instead of handing them an electronic device,” says Steven Gortmaker, PhD, professor of the practice of health sociology at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
2. Make computers and TVs stay in the shared spaces of your home. When your kids use screens in the kitchen or living room, it’s easier to keep an eye on the shows they watch, the games they play, and the websites they’re on.
3. Add tech-free time to your family’s schedule.https://www.facebook.com/pediamedcy/ “At any age, kids should know there are specific times when screens stay off, like at meals and before bed," Hill says. Even better, set aside time every week when the family does something fun together -- no devices allowed.
4. Watch how often you use your own devices. If you keep your face buried in your phone, your kids won’t see a good reason why they should get off their screens. Plus, those devices affect the time you spend with your children. Researchers who studied families at fast-food restaurants noticed parents were often more focused on their smartphones than on the children at the table.
5. Make limits a regular part of screen use. When the rules are clear and consistent, you can avoid daily battles when you tell the kids it’s time to turn off the TV, computer, or phone.
7. Help your kids find other ways to have fun. “If a child has nothing to do but stare at a screen, then we should not be surprised when that is what he or she does,” Hill says. Keep other options -- art supplies, books, Frisbees, and bikes -- around and ready when your kids claim there’s nothing else to do.
8. Make tech work for you. Use programs and apps that you can set to turn off computers, tablets, and smartphones after a given amount of time.
9. Adjust screen-time limits as your child gets older. “For middle-schoolers and teens, parents may want to involve them more in the decision-making process,” Hill says. You could talk with them about how much screen time the whole family should get. Once you’ve settled on a plan, stick to it.
10. Consider donating or recycling your old electronics. “Usually households have a lot of devices, and they get left over and moved to other places,” Gortmaker says. “It’s good to do an inventory and see if you just can’t limit the technology.”
